This racial comedy was set in the small Georgia
town of Clinton Corners, "just down the road
from Plains" (home of President Jimmy Carter).
Chief Roy Mobey was the lovable redneck police
chief and Sgt. Curtis Baker his ultra-sharp black
deputy, who had been trained in big-city police
methods in New York. Also on the force was Cloris
Phebus, a man-hungry policeowman; young Harley;
and "good old boy" Jasper. Teddy Burnside was
the chubby, weak-willed mayor, a mama's boy who
was elected because nobody else wanted the job.
He also ran the local bank, Burnside Savings and
Loan, though he usually preferred to pass the
buck; his favorite departing words were: "Handle
It!" Curtis was always trying to make time with
the mayor's secretary, Lucille, and finally in
May 1979, they were married. Added to the cast
in the second season were Tracy Quinn, a cub
reporter, and Roy's mother, Julia Mobey.
