The students at inner-city Parkmont Sr. High School,
in East Palo Alto, California, were surly, intimidating
street kids. They had run three English teachers out of
school since the beginning of the year. Then in strode
drawling Louanne Johnson, a petite but tough former
Marine, the latest in a long and honorable line of TV
teachers who "really cared." She could spit back at them,
but she also used humor, clever gimmicks, and real caring
to win them over. She went to their homes, took in their
babies, and covered for them on their jobs so they could
study. Their bad-ass friends tried to pull them back to the
mean streets, but when violence loomed, others would
come to her aid. The streets were no match for Louanne.
Among the kids, Callie was a young single mom, Gusmaro
a tough gang member, and Cornelius a big brooding kid
who expressed himself through graffiti. Jerome was the
gang services counselor, Hal the history teacher, and Bud
the disillusioned computer teacher who was particularly
hard on Louanne. To him, her kids were all thugs.
Mickey's Tavern was the faculty hangout.
Based on the memoirs of the real Louanne Johnson
(My Posse Don't Do Homework), and the subsequent
1995 film starring Michelle Pfeiffer.
