328 Chauncey Street, Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, New York,
the apartment residences of the Kramdens and the Nortons.
Fifteen years after the depression they were still struggling
to make ends meet. Ralph Kramden and Alice Gibson married
following his acquiring employment as a bus driver
with the Gotham Bus Company.
Ed Norton, a sewer worker, and his wife, Trixie, live above the Kramdens.
Stories depict the sincere attempts of two men to
better their lives and the ensuing frustrations when
their schemes to strike it rich inevitably backfire.
Although The Honeymooners is one of the best
remembered comedy highlights of TV's golden age,
it was seen for most of its history as a segment
within other programs. Oddly enough, the 39 episodes
of the independent series were not successful at the time.
In 1956, after the less-than-anticipated response to
The Honeymooners series, Gleason returned to a regular
variety format. The Honeymooners were presented as part
of The Jackie Gleason Show up until its last episode.
The Honeymooners began as a series of Skits in 1951 on Jackie Gleason's
variety series, Cavalcade of Stars, on the old DuMont Television Network.
Pert Kelton played the role of Alice in these early Honeymooners skits.
These skits were so popular that in 1955 Gleason suspended the variety
format and filmed The Honeymooners as a regular half-hour sitcom. This
is when Audrey Meadows took over the role of Alice. The Honeymooners
shows are all copyrighted and can't be shown here, but the early Cavalcade
of Stars skits are in the public domain and you can watch one complete
