This cartoon series about a middle-class family
of the future was the 21st-century equivalent of The
Flintstones. George Jetson worked for Spacely Space
Sprockets, commuting to the job in an atomic-powered
bubble. He lived with his wife, Jane, and their children
in Skypad Apartments, which were raised and lowered on
huge hydraulic lifts to stay clear of bad weather. A
robot maid, Rosie, packed son, Elroy, off to school in a
pneumatic tube each morning, while teenybopper daughter,
Judy, spent her free time learning the latest dance, the
Solar Swivel. Astro was the family dog. George's
boss was Cosmo S. Spacely.
After leaving prime time, The Jetsons proved to be
remarkably durable as a Saturday morning children's show,
despite the fact that only 24 episodes had been produced.
Reruns aired on all three networks over the course of two
decades between 1963 and 1983. In 1985, to make the series
more viable in the syndication marketplace, 41 new episodes
of The Jetsons were produced, bringing the total to 65.
