This drama chronicles the daily struggles of well-intentioned
young Senator William Sterling Jr. who brings a fresh perspective,
and his own agenda, to Capitol Hill. Thrust into political office
after the un-timely death of the senior Senator from California,
Sterling is forced to navigate the murky world of Washington
politics with only the help of his resourceful staff to guide him.

Mister Sterling's staff consists of super-charged chief of staff
Jackie Brock; legislative director Tommy Doyle, the principled
Beltway insider; and Leon, resident techno-whiz.

Growing up in the shadow of his father the former great and
powerful Governor of California, William Sterling, Jr. has
purposefully avoided politics, preferring to make a difference
in his own way by working in prison reform.

Sterling sets out to shake up the status quo. A good judge of
character, Sterling quickly realizes the value of those around him.
Senator Jackson is his confidant...someone who understands
his new political world and can help him to navigate through it.
Laura Chandler is an ambitious political reporter.

Senator Sterling's staff recognizes that he will need their help
adjusting to his new role; they also realize quickly that working
with Senator Sterling requires a willingness to support his
unconventional approach and loyalty to his own beliefs. From
supporting farm workers to his idealist views on welfare reform
and taxes, Sterling maintains a commitment to his principles and
surprisingly, his dedication affords him an unexpected level of power.
Along his political journey, Bill Sterling, Jr. begins to understand
why his father chose a political career and, every now and then,
is reminded why he had not.
