They say you can never go home again — especially
when you've already come out of the closet. This
half-hour comedy examines what it means to be true
to yourself and true to your family no matter
how unsupportive and unforgiving they are.
What is normal? A grandfather who is closed-minded to
accepting other races, religions and sexual orientions;
a grandmother in denial who fights to keep the peace in
her family; a sister who dates losers in hopes of
meeting a prince to help raise her rambunctious teenage
children; a son who leaves his wife and family to find
himself; an ex-wife who marries a man completely opposite
from her former husband or a son without a back-up plan
for his future who decides not to go to medical school?
The truth is, it's all normal.
WILLIAM "BUTCH" GAMBLE, JR. is a rugged, confident,
good-natured, average guy in every way… except one.
After coming out of the closet to his ex-wife, son
and family, Butch left his small mid-western community
for the greener and more tolerant pastures of Los
Angeles. But after four years of being away from the
people he loves the most, Butch returns to his Ohio
hometown and the home of his sister PAMELA, a tough,
sexy, single mother of two teenage children -- ROBBIE,
a NASCAR-loving 12-year-old who's worried that Butch's
sexual orientation is hereditary, and KIMBERLY, a
book-smart 15-year-old, who is not as comfortable
with men as her mother and Uncle Butch are.
Determined to re-establish his relationship with his
now adult son CHARLIE, Butch finds that while Charlie
begrudgingly accepts his father's lifestyle, he still
has not forgiven him for leaving. Adding fuel to the
fire is Butch's ex-wife ELIZABETH who still has feelings
for him, and Elizabeth's new husband DANNY, who is as
buttoned-down and white-collared as Butch is untucked
and working- class. Rounding out the Gamble family are
Butch's parents -- dad Bill, who finds his son's
lifestyle "unnatural" and mom Joan, who can't
bring herself to say that her son is gay.
