"Leapin' jeeps!" The Rat Patrol came roaring onto TV screens in 1966
as a wartime action-adventure series with a touch of humor. The Rat
Patrollers were four young commandos, three Americans and one Englishman,
fighting General Rommel's elite Afrika Korps in the North African desert early in
World War II. Sam Troy was the unit's leader, usually wearing an Australian bush hat.

Demolitions expert Jack Moffitt was the British member of the Patrol.
An expert on the desert and on the local Arab tribes which inhabit it,
Moffit speaks fluent German and Arabic, as well as being able to read
several ancient, dead languages. Prior to the war, he accompanied his
father (a noted archaeologist) on multiple trips to the Sahara.

Mark Hitchcock was the young private known as "Hitch" trying to live down
a "sissy" reputation, an Ivy League college man turned soldier. Often chewed
bubblegum and has the catchphrase "who was there sarge, you or me?".
Wears a red & black civil war cap.

Tully Pettigrew was the charming con man of the group. Called one of the army's
best wheelmen by Troy, Tully grew up in Kentucky and apparently gained his
considerable driving skill by running moonshine.

Capt. Dietrich, C.O. of a German armored unit, was their usual enemy, though
sometimes the two sides had to join forces to fight off the Arabs. He was a
dedicated, but honorable German officer. By the end of the series it is shown
that Dietrich is an anti-nazi who although is proven to be a cunning opponent,
would never stoop to the methods of Nazi officers.

They traveled over the burning sands in two machine-gun-mounted jeeps,
working as an independent team because no organized unit could hold them.
Their mission was to terrorize and destroy the Nazi desert forces (Afrika Korps)
led by German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel (a.k.a. "The Desert Rat").

The Rat Patrol was based on the real-life exploits of the
WWII British armored car outfit called "The Long Range Desert Group."
The series was filmed on the deserts of Spain.
