Robert B. Parker's literate Boston detective was brought to television in
this carefully crafted series. Spenser was not only well-read, he was a gourmet
cook, an ex-boxer, and a former Boston policeman. Operating out of a converted
firehouse (which the city of Boston took back at the beginning of the second
season), he drove around town in a vintage Mustang solving crimes and protecting
those who wanted a little class with their private detecting. His chief street
contact and sometime backup was even more eccentric, a tall, menacing, yet
intelligent black man who operated on both sides of the law. Hawk was a freelance
enforcer who would slowly call from the shadows, "Spen-sah!," in a way that made
you wonder whose side he was on, just before he blew somebody away with his
oversized magnum pistol.

Lt. Quirk was Spenser's hard-nosed buddy on the Boston Police Departmant, and
Belson, his slovenly, wisecracking subordinate. When Quirk was forced to retire
after suffering a heart attack, Belson became Spenser's chief contact on the
force. Spenser's girlfriend, Susan (he had asked her to marry him but she was
affraid to marry a man who was always getting shot at), was a school guidance
counselor; she left for San Francisco in the second season, to "think things
over," but returned in the third. While she was gone Spenser's chief female
foil was Assistant D.A. Rita, with whom he was often at odds. To give the series
a more "literary" feel, Spenser himself functioned as a narrator, as well as
dispensing pretentious quotes from the classics in each episode.

The series was filmed on location in Boston, Massachusetts.
Four "Spenser" TV-Movies were made 1993-1995.
