THAT'S LIFE is a drama about Lydia DeLucca, a thirtysomething
New Jersey woman who turns her life upside down when she
ditches the blue-collar guy she is about to marry and
decides instead to go back to college. When Lydia enrolls
as a freshman at nearby Montclair University, her mother,
Dolly, fears that her choice will result in a lifetime of
loneliness, while her father, Frank, thinks she should take
a computer class so she can be a viable candidate for the
secretary pool. Meanwhile, her police officer brother,
Paulie, continues to get under her skin.
Her friends, Jackie, a smart-mouth hairstylist, and Candy,
a 1988 Miss New Jersey who is still fixated on that
once-coveted title, lend their support to Lydia even
though they think she is making a big mistake. Although
she feels like a fish out of water, competing with
students who are often smarter bookwise than she is,
Lydia is determined to make her mark on campus.
Can a feisty 32-year-old Roman Catholic bartender from
New Jersey find happiness as a college freshman? Lydia
DeLucca hopes so. She’s put a lot on the line to enroll:
dumping her cloddish fiancé, defying the expectations
of her supportive but skeptical best friends and
standing up to her parents. As her dad says,
"You wanna find yourself, go to mass."
