Simon Templar was a dashing figure, urbane, sophisticated,
and independently wealthy. He was also a crook, but a
gentlemanly, modern-day Robin Hood-type crook who took
on the causes of those who had been robbed, swindled, or
in other ways taken advantage of by their fellow man.
He pursued his quest for adventure throughout Europe and
the world. His calling card, a stick figure with a halo
(representing a "saint"). He was equally well known in society
circles and among the police of six continents. The police
generally regarded him as a mixed blessing, for although
he was dedicated to justice, he often used extralegal
means to achieve his ends.
The Saint had long been a popular character in fiction,
first in the best-selling mystery novels of Leslie Charteris
and later in a series of movies and a radio show in the
1930s and 1940s. This television version was produced in
England and was first seen in syndication in the U.S. in
the early 1960s. It made its network television debut,
with all new episodes, in 1967 on NBC.
CBS added Return of the Saint to its Late Movie lineup
in 1980. Ian Ogilvy replaced Moore in the title role.
These episodes had been produced in England in 1978.
Yet another version of The Saint surfaced during the
1989-1990 season, with Simon Dutton playing the
role in a series of made-for-television movies.
