A semi-documentary-style presentation wherein the
lives of show-business personalities, who appear
as guests, are relived through the testimonies
of friends and family.
Each show opened with Edwards surprising an
unsuspecting individual, and informing him or her
that "this is your life." The guest was then
transported to the program's studio, where his
life story was presented.
Edwards would read from the honored guest's
This Is Your Life book, chronologically covering
the high points in his life, and would pause
periodically in the narrative for the voice of
an offstage guest. The guest of honor would try
to guess whose voice it was - a relative, friend,
teacher, minister, business associate, etc. - and then
the offstage guest would come out to reminisce
about their shared experiences. This would go
on until the entire life story was unfolded.
At the end of each show, Ralph Edwards gathered
all the guests together on the stage and
personally presented the guest of honor momentoes:
a film of the show, a camera and projector to
show it on, a charm bracelet with each charm
depicting a significant event in the guest of
honor's life, and various other prizes.
Ralph Edwards created This Is Your Life for
radio in the 1940s. It won two emmys during
it's long nine-season run on NBC.
A syndicated edition lasted only the 1971-1972
season. In 1983 a new syndicated version
appeared hosted by Joseph Campanella.
