This medical drama was a spin-off, of sorts, from
the popular comedy M*A*S*H. In the 28 years since he
had been discharged from the 4077th M.A.S.H. unit
in Korea, balding Dr. John McIntyre had mellowed
considerably. He not only learned to stop fighting
the system, but became part of it, as chief of surgery
at sprawling San Francisco Memorial Hospital. His
concern for his parients still sometimes tempted him
to violate "established hospital procedures," but
Trapper had learned to mollify the hospital administration,
represented by bookish Arnold Slocum. Working with
Trapper was an admiring young doctor named Gonzo
Gates, whose brash, irreverent attitude and love of life
reminded Trapper of his own youth. Gonzo, the hospital
Lothario (who lived in an R.V. parked in the hospital parking
lot), had even served in an army M.A.S.H. unit himself,
during the Vietnam War, and was a talented surgeon.

Also featured was Trapper's scrub nurse, Starch,
who went all the way back to his M.A.S.H. days (she was
replaced by Nurse Shoop after actress Mary McCarty died
after the first season); sexy young nurse Gloria
Brancusi; and doctors Jackson and Riverside, the latter
a likable but officious chief of emergency services.
